Rain of Feathers
the folly of man

It was a thin stream of white flakes, cascading down from above like a faucet had been turned on in the sky.
I looked up, but the stream began outside of my line of vision, above and beyond the roof of the 14 storied high-rise condominium we lived in. I was employed as a weekend maintenance man, so I had the keys to the roof. Up I went to investigate this strange phenomenon.
On the roof, I looked up and saw that the stream of white flakes came from a long line in the sky, as if it had been drawn by a giant finger, it dwindled off into the distance. It seemed to be riding an invisible stream of air currents through the sky to just above our building, where the stream of air apparently ended, and so the stream of flakes tumbled straight down, a few feet from our balcony to be dispersed by the breezes between our building and the one immediately to our northern side.
Sadly, I realised that what I was seeing was the remains of a flock of birds that had been sucked though a jet engine, shredded to a fine spray of feathers and carried by the wind to where it came down.
Another mark on the ledger of humanity's gigantic debt.
One day we will meet a similar fate, I'm sure. I wonder who, or what will witness that day of reckoning?
