Synchronicity

The mystery continues...

During the late 70’s I was a professional drummer, playing in a band that was on the first leg of an 8 month tour across Canada. On the first night we were playing in a small town in south-western Ontario. We were invited to a party on a farm, just outside of the town, after the show. I declined the invitation because I wanted to get up early enough to get a train to another town where my mother was in hospital for cancer treatment.

Around 5 in the morning I was awakened by some of the other members returning to their rooms. They had been in a bad truck accident on the way back from the party.
The driver (also the singer of the band) was in the hospital and would remain there for months, seeing his injuries were so severe.

He was an eccentric fellow, and he would not allow anyone to sit in the front passenger seat of the truck when he was driving. Except for myself. He and I were fairly close friends so he would insist that no-one sit in the seat that he thought of as being mine. Consequently, any passengers would be forced to sit in the rear seats, as they did that night.

I had left a suitcase in the back of the truck. Some clothing and books. The truck was a write-off and was towed to the dump, where I had to go to pick up my suitcase.

When I saw the condition of the truck I was amazed that anyone had even survived the accident. The right front end, where the front passenger seat was, had been crushed, literally. Anyone sitting in that seat would have been killed for certain.

The driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and struck a concrete bridge abutment while going at a high speed. The part of the truck that was most damaged was where I would have been sitting if I had gone to the party.

So, if my mother hadn’t gotten cancer and had not been hospitalised at that precise time, I wouldn’t have had a reason to visit her and I would have gone to the party and more than likely; I would have been killed.
