LAVC has come into the social networking age with its own Facebook page. The page features information about the campus, campus pictures and upcoming events for current students, prospective students and alumni. Facebook members can become a fan of the LAVC page by searching for “Los Angeles Valley College” in the search option. The college’s Public Relations and Outreach and Recruitment departments are also working on updating the college’s MySpace page to help attract new students and to provide information to our current students and alumni.

Valley Star Receives Awards at Annual JACC State Conference
The Valley Star received nine on-the-spot awards and earned several honors in the bring-in and mail-in categories at the annual state conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) on April 3-5 in downtown Los Angeles. Highlights include a 1st-place award in opinion writing for James Bennett, a 1st-place win in the bring-in photo category for John Phillips, and a general excellence award for Elizeda Beltran, James Bennett and Paul Olden for a video story they produced about Olvera Street. Approximately 40 schools participated in the competition, which offers awards for mail-in submissions that were sent by each newspaper’s staff the previous semester and on-the-spot competitions. During the on-the-spot contests, participants attend an event and are given a limited amount of time to either write a story or take a photo. Will Reyes, Josh Spence, Eric Patten, Parandzem Grigoryan, Paul Olden and Kristen Becker also took home awards.
