Valley Star Receives Awards at Annual JACC State Conference
The Valley Star received nine on-the-spot awards and earned several honors in the bring-in and mail-in categories at the annual state conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) on April 3-5 in downtown Los Angeles. Highlights include a 1st-place award in opinion writing for James Bennett, a 1st-place win in the bring-in photo category for John Phillips, and a general excellence award for Elizeda Beltran, James Bennett and Paul Olden for a video story they produced about Olvera Street. Approximately 40 schools participated in the competition, which offers awards for mail-in submissions that were sent by each newspaper’s staff the previous semester and on-the-spot competitions. During the on-the-spot contests, participants attend an event and are given a limited amount of time to either write a story or take a photo. Will Reyes, Josh Spence, Eric Patten, Parandzem Grigoryan, Paul Olden and Kristen Becker also took home awards.
