Eco Art: Assemblages "Discard"/"Toss"   5 y
Assemblage is an art form based off of collage. Whereas collage is primarily 2-Dimensional, Assemblage art goes "off the page" to form 3-Dimensional works. I call it "sculpture made out of junk".

Been in a dark mood lately. These two small works are the result: ”Discarded Dreams” Eco Art by mayah(c)2019 Assemblage; 6” X 6.5” base ”Discarded Dreams” side view ”Discarded Dreams” back view Materials: recycled cardboard base; waxed paper, tissue paper; reused paint palette scraps; handmade mini-books from scrap paper, paint pen, and embroidery floss. This assemblage piece started out with a small cube I’d made out of waxed paper and tissue papers years ago; I discovered the cube had gotten somewhat squished at the back of my desk, and was inspired to rip it open ...   read more

Eco Art:Honoring LFIRE   5 y
My friend LFIRE is a collage and assemblage artist. This one's for you, LFIRE!

LFIRE and I often exchange art. We have an understanding that we can alter, take apart, rip up, reuse, or otherwise cannibalize each other’s art in order to make something new out of it. About twice a year, for my birthday and for the Holidays, LFIRE snail-mails me large boxes filled with ”junk”---many artists call it ”ephemera” but ”good junk” it is to me---to be utilized in my art. She often includes collages she has made, with instructions for me to use these collages for ”parts” to be made into new Eco Art. Last year’s Holiday box contained several of LFIRE’s cast off collages. ...   read more

Eco Art: Bulb Box Assemblage   5 y
"Assemblage is an artistic form or medium usually created on a defined substrate that consists of three-dimensional elements projecting out of or from the substrate. It is similar to collage, a two-dimensional medium." Wikipedia

Years ago, when I first encountered assemblage art, I didn’t know what to call it, except ”three dimensional collage made out of junk”. It wasn’t until I met my friend LFIRE, collage and assemblage artist, that I had a name for it. While I’ve made many an Eco Art piece with items sticking out of a flat surface, this art piece below is most likely the first that I’ve made that I can call ”assemblage art”. Eco Art by mayah(c)2019 Assemblage, 5.5” X 2.5” X 2.5” ”Light Bulb House” made from recycled light bulb packaging, broken light bulb, dried flowers, cardboard, a ...   read more

More art utilizing recycled cardboard

Eco Art by mayah(c)2019 ”Foxes” Placard 12” X 10” Made from three different types of cardboard packaging materials, old calendar picture of foxes highlighted with paint markers; Rhimax 100% recycled paper product (backing); non-Voc acrylic glaze; jute hanger The picture of foxes is backed with Rhimax to strengthen it; it actually sticks out quite a bit from the cardboard backing for a 3-D effect. I really like the wavy packaging cardboard for it’s appearance and texture. https://www.curezone.org/upload/Members/Mayah/Eco_Art_01_Cardboard_Box_Feathery_01_2019cz.jpg Eco Art by ...   read more

Continuing to utilize cardboard as an integral part of the Eco Art piece

”Fabric Geometry” Eco Art by mayah(c)2019 11.5” X 9” x 2” This piece started out with leftover iced tea. The tea, long since diluted sitting in the ’frig, was poured into a metal broiler pan, and then pieces of white art paper and a scrap of old white sheet were placed in the pan, left to sit for a couple of hours, then taken out and dried. I like the way the color changed from bright white to beige. The paper and sheet were cut into rectangular shapes, and the paper sewn onto the sheet with machine stitching. Left over scraps of cardboard, sand paper, and burlap paper were g ...   read more

Eco Art: "Pass It On" Greeting Cards   5 y
A new concept for recycling greeting cards

My friend Your Enchanted Gardener* suggested I stop writing greetings inside the cards I make and send to family and friends, leaving the interiors blank; I could write a note on a separate piece of paper and just loosely insert it inside the card. This way, the recipient could keep the note, but then reuse and recycle the card by sending it on to someone else. I liked this idea and started doing it. Then I thought that it would be great if the card had multiple recycling potential. I thought of making a pocket inside of the card and putting blank pieces of paper inside of it, and a ( ...   read more

Eco Art: Cardboard Flower Goddess   5 y
Cardboard can be a beautiful, free, and sturdy alternative to expensive canvas or frames in making Eco Art.

I’ve utilized recycled cardboard quite frequently in my Eco Art pieces, but usually as backing material. My friend and fellow artist LFIRE has been making wonderful art utilizing cardboard (See her recent cardboard art on her latest blog: https://www.curezone.org/blogs/fm.asp?i=2420946 ) Inspired by her work, I’ve been looking at cardboard with new eyes, and seeing the artistic beauty in it. This piece is one result: The portrait of ”Venus” is from a magazine catalog advertisement; her hair is enhanced with colored ink pens. I’ve used this image of ”Venus” several times in o ...   read more

Doodle Art:Origami ball   6 y
I've been making origami art since I was a kid; here is one I made out of a recent doodle art.

”Doodle Art #15” by mayah(c)2018 ”Doodle Art” is meant to be relaxing, and not necessarily a ”work of art”. I keep pens, paper, colored pencils near my bed and when I can’t sleep, take them out and create ”doodle art”. This one has fold lines on it as I turned it into an origami ball and then unfolded it to scan it (”noun: origami--the Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures”): First few folds completed ball blowing through a small hole, the ball is inflated For complete instructions of how to make an origami ball: https://web-japan.org/kids ...   read more
