Although this Blog-writer continues to hold a truly nourishing, nutrient-dense traditional-based diet in the highest regards for dental health he also realizes the modern day environments in which most of us live in are not the same as the isolated environments of the traditional peoples that Dr. Price visited throughout his world "tour" and therefore there may be times when some natural medicinals may be in order. The following is the start for this Blog's introduction to some of the natural medicinals for dental health.
Thyme Oil -
"Thyme oil is a tonic stimulant and stomachic and digestive relieves gastritis, enterocolitis and mouth thrush. It is useful for respiratory infections, asthma and bronchitis. It is effective for treating swelling provoked by gout or rheumatic problems, for joint pains, backache and sciatica. Thyme oil is also useful for urinary and vaginal infections, endometritis (candida), prostrates and vaginitis.[additional note at source article] Thyme oil exhibits antibacterial activity and has been useful in dental practice.[additional note at source article] A component of thyme, known as thymol, appears to inhibit growth of oral pathogens in the mouth and in combination with other essential oils, may reduce dental caries.[additional notes at source article] In patients with orthodontic brackets, a dental varnish containing thymol reduced the proportion of Streptococcus mutans in supragingival plaque near the bracket.[additional note at source article] Thymol is one of the essential oils with antibacterial effects found in Listerine.[additional note at source article] ..."[15]

January 30, 2010 -"On the Trail of the Elusive X-Factor: A Sixty-Two-Year-Old Mystery Finally Solved" by Chris Masterjohn
"Weston Price was primarily interested in Activator X because of its ability to control dental caries. By studying the remains of human skeletons from past eras, he estimated that there had been more dental caries in the preceding hundred years than there had been in any previous thousand-year period and suggested that Activator X was a key substance that people of the past obtained but that modern nutrition did not adequately provide.
Price used the combination of high-vitamin cod liver oil and high-Activator X butter oil as the cornerstone of his protocol for reversing dental caries. This protocol not only stopped the progression of tooth decay, but completely reversed it without the need for oral surgery by causing the dentin to grow and remineralize, sealing what were once active caries with a glassy finish. One 14-year-old girl completely healed 42 open cavities in 24 teeth by taking capsules of the high-vitamin cod liver oil and Activator X concentrate three times a day for seven months.
Activator X also influences the composition of saliva. Price found that if he collected the saliva of individuals immune to dental caries and shook it with powdered bone or tooth meal, phosphorus would move from the saliva to the powder; by contrast, if he conducted the same procedure with the saliva of individuals susceptible to dental caries, the phosphorus would move in the opposite direction from the powder to the saliva. Administration of the Activator X concentrate to his patients consistently changed the chemical behavior of their saliva from phosphorus-accepting to phosphorus-donating. ...[1]

Continuing with Chris Masterjohn "... our continually expanding understanding of the physiology of both K vitamins and teeth now makes it clear that vitamin K2 plays an essential role in dental health. Of all organs in the body, vitamin K2 exists in the second highest concentration in the salivary glands (the highest concentration is found in the pancreas). Even when rats are fed only K1, nearly all of the vitamin K in their salivary glands exists as K2 Both vitamin K and vitamin K-dependent proteins are secreted into the saliva, although their function is unknown."

This is awesome! I now can see how it was Weston A. Price's destiny to pursue this search for his "X Factor" that we now have identified as K2 for all of its importance in health and especially "in the teeth"! Yet it is so remarkably amazing that this has not yet become our "conventional wisdom" let alone standard teaching within medical and dental schools!

There are two main dietary sources for Vitamin K2; one is grass-fed animal products, the other is fermented nato. Up til today I had believed that grass-fed animal source was preferred and now that is questionable depending on the condition that the pasture is in. Apparently the communities in Switzerland that were visited by Dr. Price were able to produce orange-colored butter! I have never seen orange-colored butter! Is orange-colored butter possible in the United States of America?[12]

"In 1928, when the idea of vitamins in nutrition was only starting to achieve recognition among health scientists, (Charles Franklin) Schnabel was searching for a “blood-building material” to help heal chickens – to decrease their mortality while increasing their egg production, according to the book Cereal Grass: What’s in it for you! by Ronald L. Seibold, M.S (written in 1990 for PINES International, Inc.).
Schnabel knew that chlorophyll was structurally similar to hemoglobin, therefore his reasoning was that “green leaves should be the best source of blood.” He experimented with different vegetables and greens but nothing produced the effect he was looking for until he came across “immature wheat.” Substituting just 10% of chickens’ diet with it increased egg production in winter from 38% to 94%. The eggs also had stronger shells. He could not yet explain scientifically why it happened, but stated that the results were so easily observed that “even a child can see the bloom of health in the grass-fed hens,” according to Seibold’s book. Schnabel then spent years studying nutrition of the grasses.
Schnabel started making powdered dry grass and giving it to his family of 7 and his neighbors as a dietary supplement. In 1942 Buffalo Courier Express reported that Schnabel fed his family wheatgrass for 11 years and none of his children were reported to have ever had any health problems or even a tooth cavity."[14]
I discovered "The Father of Wheatgrass" among my search results for "wheatgrass popsicles"! I froze two ice cube trays filled with fresh "wheatgrass" juice I made yesterday from several flats of kamut I grew. While transferring the ice cubes to a food storage bag earlier today I got the idea of "wheatgrass popsicles" and made note to search that. Although I have been aware of and worked with wheatgrass since about 1978 I hadn't heard of this scientist before let alone all the research he launched! What a find for me today! I just had to post the above account of cavity-free children here!
