I think it's a sign of the times. Society is less "personable" (more impersonal) than it used to be. Now the social emphasis ("meaning of life") focuses on commerce and technology (P.D.A.'s, cell texting, networking only for income, who has more fashion, etc.). Society doesn't really make a true connection with itself the way it used to, and I think the female psyche is more sensitive to that (more "disenchanted" than the male).

People are "cutting" and "burning" because life is no longer as "sensual" as it used to be. Males MIGHT compensate in "other ways" (more aggressive behavior and such), but females simply don't consider that an option.

Suicide (being directly responsible for your own death) is a very sad (and shameful way to die). Maybe the reason people are shying away from guns is that it is more attractive to them to be dramatic about their suicide than a simple impulse would allow.
