Gold fillings should not cause any more temerature sensitivity than Amalgam , probably less. You end up keeping your teeth the longest , perhaps your entire life , because they often last forty years . Every time you change a filling , you remove more tooth structure and you also traumatize the nerve so even though slightly more tooth structure is removed for gold fillings , this is offset because they last longer . The seal on gold fillings onlays etc must be good because if it was'nt there would be secondary decay and they would'nt last as long as they do.I have talked to several dentists and they all say composites last less than ten years and are less biocompatible than gold or porcelain
