I can't get the hang of the Neti Pot

I've been fighting a fungal sinus infection for several months. I've made progress, but seem to have a problem getting sinuses to drain. I just purchased a Neti Pot and gave it a try. Every time I got the water to drain out my other nostril, the water also went down my throat. I kept trying to tilt my head just right but couldn't seem to make it work. Could any of you Neti Pot experts give me some pointers?

Also, I have some issue w/my ears like occasional dizziness, popping and fullness. Will using the Neti Pot aggravate these symptoms? Does the water make its way into the ear canal?
