First of all, nice job! I really like the content/story on the mainpage. You are a good writer and it invites to read along/stay put for what more is coming in the future.

I will try to give you some pointers!

I would tone the colors down abit indeed.

It doesnt have to be lifeless though. The colors are just abit strong, i would opt for a more neutral colorscheme.

The different 'parts' of the site, on the left the sections recommend reading/categories etcetera, dont really integrate well, and i think that is because of the thick black lining around the different sections.

On the other hand, a site is partly about personal style as well so if it works for you i would stick with it Tweet
