If an oral surgeon writes a letter to your insurance telling them that your treatment for TMJ is medically necessary they have to cover it. Most times if they cannot provide you an "in network" doctor, they will HAVE to pay an out of network doctor. This is the law in most states (it is in Florida) and something you should look into. I got treatment in the beginning from a facial plastic surgeon. If your insurance does cover TMJ, call them and tell them that they need to provide you with a doctor who accepts your insurance. Sometimes, you can go to another town. It might be a longer drive but well worth it. I think most if not all insurance companies cover TMJ through your health plan, not dental.
