What is forgiveness anyway? And why would you want to?

I see it as a sign of weakness and setting yourself up to be hurt and disappointed all over again. Like a woman who gets cheated on over and over but uses this "I forgive you" %¤#&!§-excuse because she's too scared and too stupid to know how to survive on her own.

I can see forgiving someone for a random mistake. Missing your birthday or forgetting a special occasion, showing up late, From watching Soap Operas, I can even understand how in certain storylines a character can forgive their rapist. (Luke&Laura anyone)

Why would someone torture themselves with "forgiving" the other person over and over who won't change and will continue to do it forever? Whether it's a bf/gf, friend, co-worker or a relative?
