My dad is a nuclear physicist and although I've never had a head for Science I did have a passion for interesting people. Richard Feynman reminds me of my Dad to some degree. There is a long chapter on his fascination with locks and safecracking.

Actually any of the books listed by him would be wonderful for your son.
