I shall end this posting with the following.....Far more is owed to the prevention of disease by Hygienic methods than any pharmaceutical drug. The conditions that you describe were indeed rampant during the Civil War, but, the most successful Doctors were those who employed Hygienic care of the sick and wounded. This has largely been ignored by those who recorded the history of the time.

Dr Isaac Jennings MD 1788-1874 ( Derby Conn) was the most successful Doctor of his generation by abandoning drugging practises and adopting purely hygienic methods: clean water; unadulterated food; fresh air; physical and physiological rest (including fasting); sunbathing and other hygienic agencies in accord with the Laws of Nature.
So great was the success of Jennings and so far did his fame spread, that Yale University conferred an honorary degree upon him in recognition of his unheard-of-success.

All the major diseases in history: cholera, dysentry, smallpox, bubonic plague and so on, can only subsist in non-hygienic conditions.
A Hygienic Doctor of my acquaintance insisted that the Medical profession inject him with rabies, which they did (after a legal disclaimer) but he suffered no ill effects whatsoever.

The Greatest Health Discovery is recorded in a book of the same name, which details the beginnings of a movement known as Natural Hygiene and is still adhered to today by people from all over the World.
Since my original dealings with Advanced Leukemia in 1977 and adopting a Natural Hygienic lifestyle from that day forward, I haven't suffered from or contracted a cold, flu, or have any allergy whatsoever. Not one disease of ANY description.
This could also be the case for anyone who listens to and adheres to the Laws of Life as expounded by the pioneers of Natural Hygiene.
