Cold sores are caused by herpes, which is a virus that can cause flu-like symptoms when you get outbreaks (sores). If they are cold sores, you probably have type 1 hsv (herpes simplex virus) which is usually associated with oral herpes but can also cause genital herpes if spread to the genitals.
