what happens after 5 years?

I had mine put in 5.5 years ago and it's taken this long to get a blasted appt with the doctor to have it removed. I'll be getting it out next month. I'm having pain and cramping now, but I also have interstitial cystitis, and I can't tell if it's the IC or the IUD. It hurts so bad it makes me sick to my stomach. The IC pain has never been this bad, but maybe I'm getting used to my pain medicine and need to switch, I don't know.

I've had no side effects and pretty much no periods since I had it put in, so I've loved it! I've put on weight but I think it's because of the medicines I'm on for IC.

Has anyone not been able to get theirs removed until well after the 5 years? What happens?
