Huh? You're the current bidder now! Whatever you tried, worked.
Be SURE to watch out for "snipers" (those are the folks that bid during the last seconds and you don't have a chance to up your bid). What you probably want to do (if you don't have a sniping program of your own), is go back in and REbid, making that bid the absolute MOST your willing to pay. That will NOT change the bid amount or cause you to have to pay more unless/until someone bids against you....eBay's computer takes care of that the same way it would be at a "normal" auction is they had "phone bidding".
The person on the phone says "I'll pay up to $300"...and then the acutal bidding takes place. If no one bids against you, you get the item for the "opening bid", but if someone bids against you, the bid is "upped" one increment (enough to just beat the bidder that bid against you).
On eBay, that's called "proxy bidding"...and it basically assures that you'll win (as long as no one else bids MORE than your bid/limit).
If you've got questions, just go to 'help' and search on "proxy bidding" or "proxy".
