Rebecca Riley's bad experience with doctor

The PARENTS were charged with murder and might spend the rest of their lives in prison, but it was their family doctor who was prescribing the pills that took this little girl's life.

A combination of drugs that included the powerfull anti-psychotic Seroquil was named as the reason Rebecca died:
quote: " The medical examiner's office determined the girl died from "intoxication due to the combined effects" of the drugs clonidine, valproic acid (Depakote), dextromethorphan, and chlorpheniramine"

Seroquil, or quetipine fumarate is medication that is a member of category of medicines called psychotropics. Rebecca got it for her "bi-polar disorder", which was diagnosed at age 2&1/2. AS IF!! She could not even talk enough to show signs of this disorder to the doc, much less communicate to a doctor enough to get that diagnosis, sheesh!! Is this normal to diagnose bi-polar at that age? ? ? ?

Then there were the cough syrups -
"Chlorphenamine has antidepressant properties, inhibiting reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Based on this knowledge, the Swedish company Astra AB was able to derive the first marketed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, zimelidine, from chlorphenamine."
"Dextromethorphan (DM or DXM) is an antitussive drug that is found in many over-the-counter cold and cough preparations, usually in the form of dextromethorphan hydrobromide. It is also commonly taken above the recommended dosage by users seeking its dissociative effect."

I would not want my 2.5yr old to be on such potent mind-bending drugs, all with a "downer effect". For sure, I would be looking for signs of overdose... So the parents had a role in the death, but following doctors orders was where they went wrong.

Nonetheless, the parents are charged with murder, and meanwhile the doctor is treating other children for mental health problems and earning up to a$1million a year.

We seem to be rewarding those who do good for PharmaGiants but kill children - his income is not related to good outcomes or merit, but rather it is directly related to 'overprescribing'. This is the case everywhere that pharmaceuticals are used to treat people for their ailments - doctors get wealth and patients get worse, which requires another drug of course.
