bare copper wire, used like perimeter fence, keeps slugs and snails away - I've actually seen copper foil sold just for this.

its more expensive, but they also sell plastic garden edge impregnated with salt crystals - this has worked best of everything, due to cost, only use on my most treasured plants... Tweet
