I didn't know what to do, so I paid a little extra for some potting soil which has peat moss and other organic materials in it. I spread a layer of this under and around the sides.
For the last two trees, a family member bought some cow manure. Yuck. I dont know if this would kill anything these days or help it grow! ( Antibiotics , growth hormones, disease, bacteria....hmmmm )
