Is another name for the same technique.
Cardboard works very well...
Just cover with straw or dirt to not see it.
You can plant directly into this as well. Just punch a hole through the layers, scoop in some potting soil & plant. No need to wait.
I always try to put the manure and weeds directly on surface of ground before I start the "lasagna garden".
Also trench around the edge of the "sheet mulch" to 'frame' the bed. Makes it easier to install edging later as well.
AS posted before, if you start earlier with it, then you can also take advantage of covering the whole thing in plastic tarps. This traps the soil moisture, makes a nice refuge for worms to till underneath, and preheats the bed.
