Re: Calling Critterkids and other male dog owners
Hi Maya,
This is a tough issue for me. I wish all animals could be left intact for health reasons, but at least in the US the huge number of unwanted animals killed in shelters is horrifying and the number of backyard breeders using terrible breeding stock is out of control. It is a people issue and not an animal issuer, so in order to compensate for idiot poeple, spaying and neutering is a good thing in my book.
We got our two pups from a high end show breeder and we signed a contract that states we must spay and neuter, which we have done,(although they are both from grand champions on both sides and drop dead gorgeous dogs and could have been great breeding stock). Our male is very male and rambunctiously lovable, but we got him neutered at 7 months and he is still a ball of fire, but no humping action so far and he is now 12 months. (Though he does know how to lift his leg..lol.)
I wish it could be different, but all our critters are spayed and neutered. The cats seem fine with it and so do the dogs. The cats came from the shelter already spayed.
It does sound like some training will help him, as there are many long lived intact dogs who do control this beahvior.
I wish you all the best in turning this around! Happy training!
