We use warm to hot water to start and yes, if the water is hot you will notice the 'build-up' right away. The reason it only builds up on one side has to do with positive/negative. As far as cleaning the rods, the one that you can see the residue on - just wipe clean with a napkin or paper towel. For the other side, use a fine grain sand paper and lightly sand it up & down, then wipe it off before re-immersing. Yes, it is time consuming and must be monitored but you are putting this into your body and you are worth the best quality product you can make. If you begin with cold water the cleaning process will take longer to begin but once it gets 'cookin' you better watch it close as it goes pretty fast. You do not want to ingest any product that contains visual residue.
