By definition, an alcoholic is one who has lost the power of choice in drinking. Likely you are/were a "heavy drinker" -- if you could stop at will then you did not lose your ability to choose whether or not to drink, and are not alcoholic. If you are and your alcoholism remains untreated, you will drink again whether or not you have any intention of it now or the day it happens.

I think it is really hard to understand the concept of powerlessness over anything unless you have experienced it. To the outside world it will always look like you have a choice and that you are somehow involved in the decision to take the drink or smoke the crack or whatever.

If you (or anyone) are interested you can go to open meetings of AA and listen to countless people discuss losing the power of choice in their drinking.
