What we assume is weakness.
I would be inclined to say "their predisposition"... grzbear
I agree, hereditary weakness is too limiting in its context.
Depending on various conditions, food etc. a "different weakness" might come to the forefront.
Also, both the words hereditary and weakness limits our thinking to specific paths.
So lets do a flip.
Trapper brings up a rather synchronicity bit of information.
Under certain near fatal, if not fatal conditions for most, his father would have a much greater chance of survival due to his "weakness" of hemochromatosis.
Is this a "weakness" or a survival mechanism brought about by forced intake of certain foods for several generations?
Going further out on a limb.
Wouldn't a physician of years back, seeing a person who had been sick for years.
A person with hemochromatosis.
Who suddenly did an amazing recovery after having a blood letting accident.
Ponder upon the idea that letting of blood is healthy.
Works for me....;-)
