This is known as data mining.

Think of it this way.

Gum Disease is a warning sign that the person's body is in ill repair.

Merely think of it as an "not so early warning indicator of overall health".

The effect for most, is merely their hereditary weakness.

My take on the root cause? Being too acidic.

Remember you can also get that heart bacteria infection from an unhealthy mouth that Dr Atkin's had.

You simply aren't going to get these infections in a well resourced body.

IMHO.
