As for chemical smells: Skin absorbs anything that can become wet, whether it is applied in a solution or gets wet from continued contact. Consider nicotine patches and nitroglycerin patches. Even though the scalp is not fatty, the skin will still absorb some chemicals. And all fluids are cleansed through the liver.

So what you suggest is possible. Surprising, yes, but possible.

I hope you keep up your water intake, putting Sea Salt and/or Epsom Salts in the water (1/4 tsp) to keep up your electrolytes. It helps to increase water intake 2 or 3 days before the flush...
