I like to make all subsequent batches from the starter batch. It tastes better to me, stronger. I have used kefir grains. I enjoyed using them and probably will use them again, but at this time I find the powder starters to be more convenient. And yes, because you reuse the grains, they are cheaper. I love kefir!!
