How much Virginia snakeroot does it take to make a 5 gallon batch of tincture? Do you require the fresh or the dried root?

I have been growing this plant for a number of years now, and have found it to be as you said, a tough item to come by. It does indeed take a good number of plants to make up a pound, especially when dried. I did not realize it had reached a price of $200/pound though.
