Re: HELP! 7yo with chronic constipation
Definitely look at the foods she is eating.
There are three main reasons for constipation:
a) too little water
b) too little fibre
c) intolerance to one or more of the foods she is eating
Start with the first two - give her plenty of fresh spring water (no Kool Aid, no Coke, no soda, etc.) - you can also do 1/3 juice and 2/3 water once in a while. Make sure the juice is pure and has no additives. Give her lots of fruit and vegetables.
Watermelon in large amounts is great to get things moving - plus it has loads of water in it.
If these two things do not work start looking at the main culprits for
food intolerances . Constipation is often caused by a wheat intolerance. Milk intolerance for example usually causes the runs and/or asthma and other respiratory problems. It's not always clear cut and can be difficult to diagnose.
Take one step at a time. I had chronic constipation for more than 15 years before I finally understood what was going on.
All the best!
