Re: Need Input - please...
White Tiger and Beej, awesome posts! This is one of my most favorite scriptures in the bible. This woman was so incredibly rejected - 5 husbands dumped her and her current man wouldn't marry her. She seemed able to get the men, but not keep them. I know someone close to me like that, and though she's bright and has many good qualities, she is really very disfuctional and toxic in relationships.
What I love is that of all people in Samaria and Israel, Jesus chose her to reveal His identity to. When the Pharisees and pretty much anyone else for that matter asked Him to say if He was the Messiah, He would not plainly come out and say it. Yet here was this very rejected and broken Samaritan woman. He wasn't even supposed to give her the time of day according to the ways of the people. Yet He not only talked with Her, but plainly as could be told her who He was and what He would give her. What an act of compassion, love, acceptance and mercy. Wow.
It never gets old with me. Our value isn't in how perfect we are, but in His love for us. He made us, He knows what we are worth, and what we will be in eternity.
By the way, the Samaritans were jews who had mixed their Jewish beliefs with the idolatry of the gentiles. They were shunned by the Jewish people, as directed by God in His law.
beej, I loved what you said about those who are in Christ being Jewish. That is what the scripture teaches and just what Paul said. For those Christians with anti-Semitism in their hearts, they are hating what God loves, and they are hating themselves. Besides, every person, regardless of race or religion, is just one decision away from becoming a brother or sister in the Lord for eternity.
