Well here is what I think of them. I actually feel sorry for them and can sympathize with them in many ways. But I absolutely don't think they are cowards. They are just human. They are human beings who were born into a society that is still unwilling to accept them for being gay. Instead of living lives where they can be proud, open and honest, they are forced to hide themselves and pretend they are something they are not. Imagine the overwhelming fear, guilt, shame and pain of living your life like that. Never really being able to be close with someone or feel comfortable or at ease with yourself. People like Foley and now this evangelical preacher have lived this kind of life. They are perfect examples of what society has done to gay men and women. So full of self-hatred and shame, they created for themselves images that on the outside were conservative, proper or "normal". One chose the church and another chose republican politics. They are different costumes, but used for the same purposes. The shame is that the passions they had and still have for God or politics are now overshadowed by these scandals. They were passionate and dedicated men who were imprisoned by their secrets and their pain. I don't think people understand the weight or the toll holding a secret like that can take on a person. They aren't cowards. They are scared, lonely, souls just trying to feel complete and whole.
