the length of time you are reffering to is the controlled or low current versus a runaway current. the former is what keeps the particles small, the latter can cause very large pieces to scinter off. current can be controlled through mechanical or electronic means. i use mechanical - ie stirring or fish aerator. some ready made makers do both electric and mechanical, the mechanical usually being a magnetic stirrer. i like to keep magnets out of the picture.
