The way in which sulfonamide drugs cause liver injury is not known. The fever, skin rashes, and theperiod before an episode of jaundice have been interpreted as being caused by an immune hypersensitivity reaction; however, there is no proof of this.
It is also possible that toxicity may be involved in people who have a “cholestatic” condition in which little or no bile is secreted or the flow of bile into the digestive tract is obstructed.
