You're only human!
I've got the same questions! I don't think that you're weak & pathetic, I think that you are human. I can only tell you about my own experience...
My
Sugar cravings seem to be hormonally driven, in fact, the week before my period, I'm just REALLY HUNGRY! But with sugar...? Once I have that first taste, I want MORE. That's why I do my utmost to avoid it. I try not to keep it in the house. My husband is one of those controlled, saintly types who can just eat a TINY scoop of ice cream, or ONE cookie, & be done with it. So I'm always asking him to hide his sweet treats(seriously). Cuz I'm not happy with a little bit. I want a LOT!physiological? psychological? who knows & who cares. For me, avoidance is the ONLY thing that works. And(for the most part) I am successful at avoiding sugar. I really don't think that it would be possible to NEVER have it again, though. and honestly, I don't WANT to never have it again.
I have also given up coffee. I've also drank it since giving it up. I LIKE coffee! As long as it's an occassional treat, I don't see the problem.
I think that being on such a restrictive diet is a really difficult. It seems that you gave up a LOT, all at once. I'm not surprised at all that you've fallen off the wagon.
It's totally natural that you are now "gorging" yourself on these formerly prohibited items. You need to give yourself permission to have these things occassionally so as to avoid the feeling of deprivation that you obviously felt while denying yourself. As long as you know that it IS o.k. to have them sometimes, it is less likely that you will get caught up in the deprivation/gorging pattern again... :)
ps...tastebuds are VERY powerful... :)
