Re: My last day at work..
Get your bank to transfer the money and open a new account for you.
It will probably cost you something, banks don't do anything for free anymore, but it will be worth it in peace of mind.
There may be some discussion of 'which' bank or branch to send it to (banks like to send to their favorite affiliate), but listen to all their offers, and decide for yourself.
There is an extra advantage in having your present bank introduce you.
Or, leave most of the money where it is, go to Oklahoma and choose a bank you like. Then open an account with a bit of money, and send for the balance of the old account. All banks know how to do this!
Carry with you only what you will need for traveling expenses and, say, the first two weeks of getting established.
Agree with your friend how much cash you will need, and split that amount between you.
Or, arrange to have this amount transferred to some specific spot, not necessarily to the bank where you will be dealing, although that is a good place, too. You may not know which bank to choose until you get there.
Banks are in the business of looking after your money. (They charge you for doing so.) Make certain they tell you what services they offer.
Sadly, $8,000 isn't enough to cause much of a stir in banking circles, even though it means the world to you. Banks hardly blink an eye at $10,000, unless it is a very small town.
Still, you are entitled to a full explanation of all the services available. Maybe read the bank literature and pamphlets, so you know what to ask for. Or, print out this post and show it to the clerk in your bank. Ask them what they can offer you...with a big grin.
Bank clerks melt at a nice smile!
Good luck!
