fair question. I suspect there is a lot more to the truth in the answer, but just winging it off the top of my head, I can imagine 'they' get some kind of cheap thrill by first kicking us in the shins (effectively the fattening foods you cited ) before they shoot us in the head (by a subsequent sentence to die at the hands of establishment medical care)...... with a whole lotta commerce and profit-making to be had between these extremes.
