I would suggest that since our digestive systems have evolved without these "helpful" milk cultures that we do not require them. Further, since they are foreign to our systems, I would suggest that the body would treat them for what they are: invading bacteria. I understand, from people who have tried kefir, that it causes mucus buildup, runny noses and flu/cold like symptoms that the proponents of kefir refer to as detox -- I think it is much more likely these symptoms are the result of an immune system response.
