Has anyone on the forum had experience with this therapy? SIR stands for Selective Internal Radiation therapy and consists of microspheres (about 35 microns) of yttrium 90. The spheres are introduced to the liver via the hepatic artery and lodge in the blood vessels created by the tumours. The spheres radiate the tumours for about 36 hours (decaying to zirconium) and stop them or even shrink them, sometimes allowing them to be surgically removed. Life expectancy and quality of life are apparently dramatically improved.
The treatment was developed in Australia and has had hundreds of patients treated with it. It got FDA approval in March 2002 and is available at about 13 hospitals in the States as well as the UK, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. The website is http://www.sirtex.com
