Re: Liver Cancer - SIR Spheres

My father had this procedure performed at Durham Regional Hospital by Dr. Cirillo. He has stage iv colon cancer which spread in his liver. Our cancer doctor gave him six months to a year to live and he had failed many chemotherapy including oxaliaplatinum and cpt-11 and recently xeloda. He had a angiogram done in durham and they treated his liver the following week. They made him get a pet scan which showed cancer all throughout his liver. His cea level was 569. Dr. Cirillo did the sirspheres and my father did fine afterwards. He was very very tired, but we were told what to expect from Dr. Cirillo. His next pet scan showed that his cancer had all gone away. We are going to get another pet scan in two months. If it wasnt for this treatment, my father would not be alive. I have heard of other centers not treating patients since they are too sick or they have the wrong cancer. Dr. Cirillo told us that they would treat anyone with any type of cancer that gets into the liver. He told us that the only time he could not treat someone is when they are jaudiced. We really liked the care that we got from Dr. Cirillo. We had also seen another physician in raleight, north carolina for the same thing but we did not like this group and they told us that they did not think that they could help us with the amount of tumor that my father had. They apparently had only done a few of these cases and it seems that the physicians in durham had done some of the most cases in the country. Unfortunately, our cancer doctor didn't know about this treatment and I really think that this is wrong. We had doctors telling us that they could not do anything for my father but they were wrong and my father could have died.
