actually you don't want to short the wires like that :D
what you want is to put a handhold in each hand so that it will run current through your body.
the rings that came with it are for finger clips, you can put them directly on your fingers. some people on the forum think that the copper handholds are toxic to your skin but I think that you have to have a lot of copper in order to get toxicity,
it is in fact a neccesary mineral for your body(sorta like iron, you can get to much iron but it's tough)
