you melt butter about a 1/4 cup and slowly stir in flour until it forms a thick paste don't stop stiring, with your other hand pour in some milk slowly always stiring it add milk until you have a thick creamy sauce . roux is the base for most gravies and sauces . I also will make this and add velvita cheese and pour it on steamed broccoli
