There was a REALLY good article on menopause and HRT in the 2nd last issue of Vitality (at health food stores etc.) by a woman named Helke? sp. I think she's in the Toronto area. In fact the article was so good I cut it out and kept it, even though I'm nowhere near menopause myself. It just came to mind, I'm not sure why but I try to trust my instinct these days. Maybe she could help your friend.
