Grog re: disagreements
Grog, I'm not so sure that you and those people you replied to actually have such different perspectives.
I know that they warn against Atkins, and you support it, BUT:
1) They are against the refined products industry's sugars, flours, and chemicals, just as you are.
2) You recognize the importance of a wide selection of vegetables, and even fruits in a healthful diet. I think the problem here is that a lot of people only do the 1st stage of Atkins, for a very long time. It is my understanding that the first stage is only two weeks, after which adding back even more veggies. But a lot of people (perhaps they didn't read the book - perhaps they don't care) just stick with steak and eggs while ignoring their daily salads, for months on end. So the problem here is perhaps incorrect understanding and/or application of Atkins on the part of many dieters.
Now, you won't get vegans to go along with you on the Atkins diet, but you definitely can get people of a Nourishing Traditions/Shelleycat mindset to follow this. I'm not saying I'm 100% for Atkins, just pointing out that there are points of agreement here which are usually not mentioned.
