This certainly won't be the last horror story about Saddam we hear...
It's nice these children were freed from imprisonment. If the story proves true, (which is in character with the Hussein regime) they were most likely forcibly imprisoned and just as likely tortured.
The Hussein regime has a notoriously bad human rights record. They did monstrous things. Most of us against the war have never disputed that. (...like Ass. Secretary Of Defense Richard Armitage said of Saddam Hussein in 88 when WE supported him and he committed genocide.. "well... these people aren't the league of women voters")
Would Iraq be better off without Saddam? Almost certainly.
However, triggering the next world war over his removal is not worth it. And that is where this will lead.
So, besides all the misery and butchery done on Iraqi citizens because of this invasion, and the spreading turmoil and hatred it will foster with an occupation, this debacle only lead to the US invading country after country in an endless war. And a police state here at home. Just watch.
Although you seem to care about the brutality of Saddam Hussein towards his people, the US administration doesn't. Nor does it really much care what weapons he has left (in fact, I'm sure they are busy right now burying barrels of Mustard Gas from Ft Bragg in some captured warehouse even as we speak to justify this invasion). Simply put, the brutality of Saddam is an excuse for a power grab.
The Bush administration has shit on our constitution at home, has most of the citizenry of the US living in adject fear of manufactured terror threats... and he has convinced the American public we must invade the middle east, build more military bases, grab their resources for American corporations, (and establish firm economic and geo political control of that whole 'sphere of influence') by the destruction of the latest US bogeyman, Saddam Hussein.
It's funny how when Saadam is all but buried, the other bogeyman bin Laden pops back up again. And once he is no longer useful... the Bush boys will just conjure up another one....
But, I will say.... I am truly happy these kids have been sprung from the cluthes of their dictator.
Now, if we in the US could only get sprung from the clutches of ours....
