Second rite hard to do

Hi, I'm new to this forum. Last fall I started doing the Five Tibetans and did them for several weeks, but then for some reason I stopped doing them. I found it really hard to do the second rite, and a friend of mine in fact (who has a Masters Degree in physical education, or something like that) said that position was not good for anyone's back, and I kind of believed him, because when I'd do the second exercise my hip made a popping sound, although it didn't hurt. The other exercises were okay. I found it really hard however, to increase by 3 repetitions every week - isn't that what the original book says? I think I may have gotten up to 11 repetition, but even that was pushing it! Is anyone else who's out there doing these exercises, a slow starter like me? Have you felt any benefits? I didn't.
