I think that by starting out slowly as recommended (eg. 3 repetitions of each, building up weekly in incremenets of 2 repititions per week), you'll most probably be safe.
Going slowly will allow you to gauge your progress properly, and take note of any discomfort that arises.
I suppose as with anything- be gentle!
