Perhaps I'm giving the "average" American too much credit.
Maybe the problem is that I assume that the average American would consider that killing others for the oil industry, or waging war to increase arms sales, or destablizing societies to topple their democratically-elected governments, are bad things. Maybe the bulk of American people are really quite happy with the idea of exploitation.
After all, I expect that the average American would consider these things bad if directed toward him. Do unto others...
