One way to determine the poles of a magnet is with a compass. The side marked North on a compass is the North pole of the compass magnet. The side marked South is the South pole of the compass magnet. When you travel North, the North pole of the compass magnet is facing you and the South pole of the compass magnet is facing the North pole of the earth. Opposite polarities attract, like polarities repel. So the North pole of your magnet will be attracted to the South pole of a compass magnet and vice versa.
