Re: Have you ever made a mistake when speaking?

It's the whole slippery slope problem, Ev. The United States Government has a history of just taking it one little step at a time. Then one more little step. Then one more little step. And so on. And so on. And so on.

No, of course we aren't talking about forcing religion on anyone. Not now, anyway. We're just edging ever so slightly in that direction. Just a little bit... like government funding of religion. What's the big deal? I mean, just because the Nazis funded religion through enforced collection of religious-based taxes, entirely for the purpose of getting those religions to ignore the atrocities the Nazis were committing... well, we're not collecting taxes directly! We just think funding some things wouldn't be such a bad idea. And we're not committing atrocities! How dare you compare our righteous destruction of Iraq with the Nazis! We're not gassing Jews or bombing the French and British! We're boming the Islamic Arabs, and they're evil, and they attacked first! It's different!

And that history of breaking promises, of taking things beyond where we promised we'd set limits? Well, we're not like that now! We promise! We're from the government. We're here to help! Honest! We would never take it further than that! We don't want to enforce religion, we simply want to be able to support religion! After all, we're all religious to a degree! Don't you believe in God?

Speaking of slick-tongued devils...

America was founded on the idea (one of them, anyway) that getting the government involved in religion is a Bad Thing(TM). And it is. History is replete with how government entanglement with religion results in lots of commandment violations, first and foremost the "Thou Shalt Not Kill" one -- you know, the one you don't mind other people violating in Iraq "for our protection".

We Americans who raise our voices against such things are doing it because we have seen the slippery slope far too many times. We have some ability to foresee consequences by looking at the trend -- where is this headed? Well, every instance (or just about every instance) in the past where we have been promised that things would not go beyond a certain point, well, they definitely went beyond a certain point. I've listed a few in this forum already -- and no one ever once even tried to argue against my points. In fact, only a holocaust apologist would have sufficient inherent blindness to attempt it.

But this time, it's surely different.

After all, George says he's a Christian, and he wouldn't lie, would he? He's never told a lie in his life! He's a great, great man. He only wants to protect us from those unthinking, evil Islamic terrorists.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the oil.

He's a saint!

God bless him!
